Getting Started with Your Mini Farm

Hello Neighbors!

Are you thinking about using your property for a mini farm? It’s a great way to generate some nice produce to harvest for yourself or branch out and sell to others.

Now, you may be wondering what are the best options for spring and summer gardens on a mini farm. There are many possibilities for you to explore. Beans and corn are always good, reliable options but also consider squash, peppers, and tomatoes. Of course, you may be feeling a little more adventurous and decide to plant some watermelon or cantaloupe as well.

Once you have decided what to plant, be sure to go in with a good plan. Think about the crops and how you plan to sell or market them so they can generate profit for you in the future. Keep in mind the challenges of your land as well. This will help determine which areas are best to cultivate for planting crops.

Early Spring

If you are a fan of herbs, shoot for April to get started with an herb garden. These are easy to grow and serve many purposes. You can sell the plant or the seeds, and you can even sell these online! If you are short on space, consider mushrooms. They can be grown in small spaces and aren’t widely thought about, so there is definitely a market for them.

March through May

Between March and May, you might consider planting corn. It is wildly popular to grow in the south and does well with the climate and conditions. You harvest these crops just a few months later, between August and October. Be sure to monitor pests and control weeds to give your corn the best growing conditions possible.

Growing Crops

As you get to planting, be sure to protect your soil. It may not sound like a big deal, but it can save you time and money and a big headache later! Enriching your soil with the nutrients it needs is vital for good crop growth. You can also utilize crop rotation and be mindful of how and when you till. You should keep in mind the way erosion can affect your property and be sure to tend to the soil in a way that preserves it for future use.

If you’re still considering the idea of a mini farm, remember that the ideas are limitless! You can try your hand at growing mushrooms, tomatoes, or many other crops. Decide what options you like best and get ready to reap a nice harvest!
